Case Study: NMIT Epping Campus
Food Flooring delivers another quality finish for the meat facility at NMIT Epping campus.

Food Flooring was set the challenge by NMIT to install a slip-resistant, hard-wearing and chemical-resistant floor with thermal shock properties for their new meat processing training facility in Epping.

The training facility at Epping will teach all aspects of meat preparation and storage and will be subject to heavy foot and trolley traffic. With cool rooms and freezers also in this facility we needed to be sure of the system that we selected. With exposure to heavy traffic, fats, oils, extreme cold and cleaning detergents Food Flooring decided that Flowcrete HF SR was the best option for this project as it met all of the requirements for the facility, as well as providing an attractive clean finish.

The project began with the preparation of the floor using the latest technology in diamonds and grinding machines to ensure that the highest level of preparation was achieved. At Food Flooring we understand that a finished floor is only as good as the level of preparation.

Drains, strip drains and expansion joints are typically the weakest point of any floor. Mechanical damage can occur when replacing the grate after drains are removed for cleaning. All strip drains and drains were jack hammered out to ensure maximum strength, avoiding the constant removal and replacement of drain covers.

All expansion joints in the facility were jack hammered out and then filled with an epoxy mortar to ensure maximum strength and the ability to reinstall nice neat saw cuts to the finished product.

Heat strips in the floor below freezer doors also received this treatment to ensure a long lasting finish. A 75mm radius epoxy cove was also installed at all walls and bunds to ensure water run off and ease of cleaning.

Other areas of the facility such as change rooms and toilets were also resurfaced. Like the meat area these rooms will also be subject to vigorous cleaning. The floors were graded with an epoxy mortar to ensure that all water ran to drains and that no puddles were left eliminating cross-contamination from the toilets and change rooms to the meat preparation areas.

Boot washes formed from epoxy and concrete were also installed to aid in the cleanliness of the facility.

The end result was a clean end appealing red finish with non slip properties that would out perform many other systems and techniques.

With a 10 year product guarantee, NMIT had a floor that would service the needs of their 800 metre-squared facility long into the future.
